The Baron of Kings Cigars

Kings Baron

Kings Cigars began in 2010 but appears to have released their first cigars to much success at the 2013 IPCPR. They returned to IPCPR in 2014 to release additional blends and sizes. Kings has a factory in Estelí, Nicaragua and Santiago, Dominican Republic. The theme behind the Company’s name is to provide a “taste of royalty” in the blends it creates. I met with Pete Tyndale, King’s master blender, at the IPCPR and I can attest to their passion in making cigars. Kings makes 4 different blends ranging from mild to full bodied, each in a series that has a position of royalty in the name. Pete gave me a sample of 4 series for review and this one is for the Baron. King’s marketing material is above average for an operation their age and size.

The Baron I smoked was a 5 X 52 Robusto with an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper that was aged for 3 years, and a Habano Criollo Nicaraguan binder. The filler is proprietary. The Baron also comes in a 7 X 52 Churchill. The Baron’s appearance was good but there was an overly firm spot about an inch from the cap. That same hard spot was in the second Baron I also tried. The initial taste is quite nutty and the smoke is almost creamy but average in volume. There was a good draw so the hard spot did not interfere with anything and the ash was normal, confirming a good construction. The aftertaste had a hint of cedar and was pleasant. Pete said this cigar is a wolf in sheep’s clothing and he was spot on as the body matured from mild to just about medium as I smoked down to the final third, which included pepper and some spice. The second cigar confirmed my impressions of the first one, including the 1 hour smoking time.

The SRP for the Baron is $7 to $8, a fair value for this smoke. For an early entrant into the cigar world, Kings is off to a decent beginning and I look forward to the other series. I rate the Baron a 3.5 out of 5.
