Undercrown to the Top

Drew Estate UndercrownDrew Estate has rocked the tobacco world.  Years ago, when he started the company Jonathan Drew was thought of in Nicaragua as that crazy American.  Now, while the cigar establishment may still think he’s a little crazy, they all acknowledge that the revival he has brought is incredible.  Drew Estate makes some great cigars and sometimes they are hard to find.  One of the best known brands Liga Privada i so good that the rollers were always smoking that line.  There weren’t enough to sell and the rollers were no longer allowed to smoke theses sticks.  So they took to rolling cigars from the scraps of the Liga Privada wrapped it in a great San Madreas maduro and called it Undercrown.

When you first look at the cigars they look great.  They look like a great cigar.  A beautiful, silky, supple, rich, chocolate brown colored stick, that is easy to punch and light.

Undercrown is well constructed.  It burns evenly with a crisp edge.  The nice dark gray ash held well.  The draw was open and easy smoking.

This is a flavor forward cigar.  By that I mean, you know that you are smoking a cigar.  It is filled with sweetness and creaminess.  But, I don’t think of htis in any way as a mild cigar.  Throughout the smoke I got a nice pepper tone, pleasant but not overwhelming.  The sweetness gave way to a more medium bodied smoke as the cigar progressed.

The value proposition is a difficult question to deal with.  It is completely subjective.  And, not always about the exact price.  There is such a thing as a great valued $10. cigar just as there is an overpriced $3.00 cigar.  When you compare the price of this stick to its big brother, the Liga Privada, it is quite a nice value.  For many the Liga Privada is a special occasion smoke.  This cigar, the Undercrown can be an everyday smoke.  Enjoy.
